‘Don’t Mention the Children’ | A poem for the children of Gaza, by Michael Rosen
Sep 15, 2025
, 167K subscribers,Text Copyright © 2015 Michael Rosen, published by Smokestack Books ‘Don’t Mention the Children’ was written in 2014 by the children’s author, poet and activist Michael Rosen following a Guardian report that the Israeli government had banned a radio advert naming children killed in Gaza. Gaza is now the deadliest place in the world to be a child. Over 20,000 children have been killed by Israeli forces. The actual number is undoubtedly higher. These children had names, and favourite subjects in school. They wanted to be teachers, doctors and astronauts when they grew up – the same as children in the UK and across the world. They were, and still are, someone's everything: their entire universe. We refuse to allow their suffering to become normalised. We must make their voices heard. With Save the Children UK and Choose Love, we called on actors, presenters, activists and influencers to use their voices and platforms to ensure these children can never be erased. The poem was written to expose the silencing of children’s suffering in the face of devastating violence. Since then, the situation for children has only grown worse. Its message remains painfully relevant today. Demand Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take urgent action for children in Gaza and the West Bank. Gaza ceasefire at risk if Trump receives Nobel Peace Prize too soon, says expert
ct 9, 2025 #Palestine #Israel #Gaza
h, 16.8M subscribers,In an Al Jazeera interview, Sultan Barakat, professor of public policy at Hamad bin Khalifa University, said the Gaza ceasefire is still in its very early stages, with Israel continuing attacks on Gaza. He highlighted the global focus on the deal, noting that the United States holds the key leverage over Israel, particularly Prime Minister Netanyahu, to enforce compliance. Barakat stressed that Donald Trump’s personal reputation is driving international efforts, but warned that awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize now could undermine the ceasefire’s implementation. He noted that Netanyahu is displeased with the deal, which many view as a political win for Hamas, and emphasised that negotiations mark a shift from trying to defeat Hamas to engaging with them directly. Barakat also underscored that actual peace depends on implementing the agreement on the ground, including the release of hostages and humanitarian aid. He urged patience and careful diplomacy to ensure the ceasefire becomes a meaningful step toward stability.

Trump's Gaza Plan Is Mere "Repackaging of Genocide" for Israel's Benefit: Diana Buttu
ep 30, 2025 Latest Shows
13.02M subscribers,Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-de... After a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump unveiled a 20-point peace plan for the Gaza Strip on Monday that aims to end Israel's war on Gaza, free the remaining Israeli hostages and remove Hamas from power. Netanyahu expressed support for the deal, but he has already backed away from key elements, including a call for Israel to eventually pull its troops out of Gaza. Hamas has not responded yet to the deal. As part of his 20-point peace plan, Trump announced the establishment of an international transitional governing body called the "Board of Peace," which Trump would head. Palestinian human rights attorney Diana Buttu says the deal is "certainly not a plan that is going to end the genocide. What they're simply attempting to do is repackage it." Buttu also notes that while Trump met with Netanyahu before announcing the plan, Palestinians were not consulted. Buttu asks, "Why is it that Palestinians have been forced to negotiate an end to their genocide?" Childhood Under Siege In Gaza | Foreign Correspondent
, 2.18M subscribe, Sep 23, 2025For the one million children of Gaza growing up isn’t guaranteed. Since the war began nearly two years ago, more than 18,000 Palestinian children have passed away. With no reliable source of nutritious food and water, life is a day-to-day prospect. Even trying to find food can be a deadly proposition. On Foreign Correspondent reporter Stephanie March and a team of Gazan journalists deliver an intimate, heart wrenching insight into the toll this war is taking on Gaza’s littlest. Because independent access to Gaza for reporters is banned by the Israeli Defence Forces, Stephanie has been working with local journalists to film with families willing to share their day to day lives. Over months they’ve documented life from different parts of Gaza. We meet a 10-year-old boy who shelters in a tent with his parents and two siblings in an existence that’s become boring, uncomfortable and very dangerous. The sound of bombs and drones are ever present. Another teenager has an infected knee that isn’t getting better. If it doesn’t heal, there are fears he could lose his leg to amputation. Simple injuries can spiral into dangerous medical conditions in Gaza because of malnutrition, filthy conditions and a lack of medical supplies. And we spend time with a 9-year-old girl who weighs half what she should amid famine in Gaza City. She's one of thousands who are desperately hoping to get treatment in other countries at a time when few western countries are willing to take them. All these children just want the war to end so they can live their lives. Israel is panicking at the sight of a floating hospital because nothing exposes the fragility of their siege quite like a ship full of bandages. Right, so Israel wants us to believe that a fishing boat loaded with flour is the equivalent of an aircraft carrier, that a Libyan hospital ship is somehow a battleship in disguise, and that medics with bandages are Hamas commandos in scrubs. Only in Tel Aviv’s fever dreams can drones circling over solidarity yachts be described as “self-defence.” And yet that’s where we are: the Sumud Flotilla sails into the drone filled yellow zone, and the skies above it hum with surveillance craft, some Israeli, some apparently American, all treating bread and bandages like weapons of mass destruction. If you want to understand the paranoia behind Israel’s blockade of Gaza, look no further than this absurd spectacle. A nuclear-armed state and its patron superpower panicking at the prospect of a single boat breaking their carefully stage-managed siege. Right, so a question that has come up a few times in comments on my previous flotilla videos has been to what end does it matter if one ship breaks the siege of Gaza? It’s just one boat, what difference does that make? So let’s start with a picture, because pictures matter. Picture the scene: a fleet of small boats — fishing vessels, solidarity yachts, and even a hospital ship flying the Libyan flag now — making their way across the Mediterranean. They carry sacks of flour, medical supplies, activists, trade unionists, clergy, musicians, students. In any sane world, this is not the stuff of geopolitics. In any sane world, the sight of fishing boats crossing open water would interest only local harbourmasters and curious onlookers. Yet here, over these boats, drones circle. Their shadows crawl across the decks. The buzzing is audible in the stillness of the sea. Activists look up and say, yes, those are drones. Carsie Blanton, the American musician aboard one ship, told social media that she believes they are American drones. Others insist they are Israeli. Does it matter? The flotilla’s spokespeople confirm that at least three were circling at once. It doesn’t really matter whose insignia sits on the wings, because the meaning is the same: the baby milk, the bandages, and the civilians are being treated as threats requiring unmanned military surveillance. ►SOURCES: PRESS TV: Global Sumud Flotilla warns of Israeli attack risk en route to Gaza ANADOLU AGENCY: Libyan hospital ship sets sail to join Gaza-bound aid flotilla; 3 drones flying over vessels of Gaza-bound aid flotilla: Spokesperson MIDDLE EAST MONITOR: Drone activity monitored over Gaza-bound aid flotilla AP: Activist group says a drone hit a Gaza aid boat in Tunisia. The Global Sumud Flotilla is the largest humanitarian convoy in history to traverse the Mediterranean Sea, says David Adler, co-general coordinator of the Progressive International, who joins Democracy Now! from the flotilla. "We are not here to drop the aid and go home and pat ourselves on the back. We are here to establish a humanitarian corridor for states themselves to assume their responsibilities and to deliver the aid at the scale that Gaza requires." Gaza doctor describes al-Shifa hospital as a ‘slaughterhouse and graveyard’

, 16.7M subscribers,Al Jazeera spoken to Nada Abu Alrub, an Australian doctor who has been volunteering at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, about the situation at the facility. Abu Alrub described “heartbreaking” scenes of entire families killed in Israeli attacks arriving at the hospital in pieces. “You don’t know whose hand is this and whose leg is this – it’s kind of like a horror movie,” she told Al Jazeera, describing the hospital as a “slaughterhouse” and a “graveyard”. “The bombing is ongoing; you feel like they are trying all type of weapons on these people,” she said. “It’s killing from every direction that you can ever imagine, psychologically, emotionally, physically – the type of injuries that I see the kids with, they are shredded into pieces, it’s unacceptable.” Abu Alrun said it is incomprehensible how this situation is allowed to continue. “You just cannot understand why anyone cannot have the courage or care enough to stop this from happening,” she added. “We need to stop it, like every minute counts that you can save whole families from being wiped off the planet just because no one is able to tell the Israeli [government] to stop the mass killing. No one is safe here, everyone is just waiting their turn.” Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Follow us on X: / ajenglish Find us on Facebook: / aljazeera Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/ Check out our Instagram page: / aljazeeraenglish Download AJE Mobile App: https://aje.io/AJEMobile

LIVE: Greta Thunberg Speaks from Gaza Flotilla After Drone Attack
Streamed live 7 hours ago #livestream #gretathunberg #gaza
, 1.15M subscribers,United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca P. Albanese, and Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, speak about reported attack on Flotilla. Thunberg said on Tuesday (September 23) that symbolic gestures like the recognition of the state of Palestine would "lead nowhere unless they are accompanied by real action", as she sailed aboard a humanitarian flotilla heading to Gaza. "Under international law, states have a legal duty to act not only to speak up, but do everything in their power to stop it, ending arms transfers, ending complicity and applying real pressure," she told Reuters in an interview. France, Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal have all recognised a Palestinian state in the past two days, as dozens of world leaders gathered at the United Nations ahead of this week's General Assembly. The Sumud flotilla meanwhile was located south of Greece at the time of the interview, "every day getting closer to Gaza," said Thunberg. The flotilla had left Barcelona on August 31, before stopping in Tunisia, when on September 8 one of its main boats was struck by a drone at a port. Thunberg said the flotilla had been monitored by drones daily since then. "No risks that we could take could even come close to the risks the Palestinians are facing every day," she said. In June 2025, the Swedish campaigner tried unsuccessfully to break Israel's longstanding naval blockade of Gaza by sailing to the territory with other activists. Israeli forces seized their small aid ship and they were deported from Israel.

Protests in Italy Supporting Palestine against Giorgia Meloni
A majority of countries now recognize Palestine as a state. But despite decades of efforts, full sovereignty and UN membership remain out of reach for a Palestinian state.
Monir Ghaedi | Davis VanOpdorp
15 hours ago15 hours ago
On September 9, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a resolution supporting a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians: 142 countries voted in favor, 10 against and 12 abstained.
The vote came less than 24 hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared there would "never" be a Palestinian state.
On September 21, the United Kingdom, Canada,Australia and Portugal announced their recognition of Palestine as a state.
France, Luxembourg and Malta have announced plans to recognize Palestine as a state this month at the United Nations General Assembly. Belgium said it would recognize Palestine given certain conditions.
The recent moves signal a shift in Western policy on Palestinian statehood — and they have angered Israeli officials.
Closest US, Israel allies recognize Palestinian statehood
Netanyahu and members of his government have consistently criticized the moves to recognize a Palestinian state, often arguing that it would reward terrorism.
Most countries worldwide already acknowledge the Palestinian territories as a state, but opposition remains strong from key powers.
Palestine already has non-member observer status, but full UN membership can only be decided upon by the UN Security Council.
In April 2024, the US, a permanent member with veto power, blocked a draft resolution that would have recommended granting the Palestinians full membership.
Path to recognition for a Palestinian state
More than 150 countries have officially recognized the Palestinian territories as a state.
Just under half of these nations did this formally after November 1988, when the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) officially declared Palestine an independent state.
Endorsements came from communist states such as the Soviet Union and China, as well as nonaligned countries Yugoslavia and India.
More countries followed suit. In the last decade of the 20th century, many central Asian nations, along with South Africa, the Philippines and Rwanda, established diplomatic relations with the Palestinian territories.
In the early 2000s, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela officially recognized the Palestinian territories as a sovereign nation.
In 2011, the Palestinian Authority (PA) applied for full membership in the UN, but the Security Council dismissed its bid.
Nonetheless, the PA's diplomatic efforts, coupled with widespread frustration with the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process, prompted more than a dozen countries, including Chile, Uruguay and Peru, to recognize the Palestinian territories as a state.
In 2011, Palestine was admitted as a full member of UNESCO, marking a victory for Palestinian diplomacy.
Iceland became the first Western European country to recognize it as a state the same year, setting a precedent for Sweden, which followed suit in 2014.
For some countries, recognizing the Palestinian territories as a state was a symbolic act to balance diplomatic relations in the Middle East and signal their commitment to a two-state solutionImage: dapd
Recent developments
In 2024, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados announced their recognition of the Palestinian territories as a state.
A year earlier, in June 2023, Mexico announced its full support for Palestinian statehood, and shortly afterward, the Mexican government moved to establish a full embassy with all the privileges and immunities granted to diplomatic missions in the Palestinian territories.
In 2018, Colombia declared Palestine a sovereign nation just before the end of President Juan Manuel Santos' term. Since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on Gaza in October 2023, the Latin American country, which exported $1 billion worth of goods to Israel in 2023, has reduced its political and economic relations with Israel.
President Gustavo Petro has cut ties with Israel, and in May 2024 ordered the opening of an embassy in the Palestinian city of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.
What is the West's stance?
The US, Germany and many Western European states and their ally South Korea have long supported the concept of an independent Palestinian state coexisting with Israel as a resolution to the long-standing Middle East conflict.
However, many have said they will only recognize the Palestinian territories as an independent nation within the framework of a comprehensive peace agreement.
That stance has begun to shift since Israel's ongoing war in Gaza began in 2023 after the October 7 Hamas-led terror attacks.
Ireland, Norway and Spain formally recognized Palestinian statehood in 2024, citing Israel's conduct in the conflict.
In 2025, France become the first G7 country to announce its intention to recognize Palestinian statehood, and Canada, Malta,
Australia and Portugal followed suit.
Japan has said it will not recognize a Palestinian state for now, a move aimed at preserving ties with the United States and avoiding further strain with Israel, the Asahi newspaper reported on September 17.
Hugh Lovatt, a senior policy fellow and Middle East expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations, told DW that Germany, as one of the staunchest supporters of Israel in the EU, is unlikely to change its position.
"Well, never say never, but I think the Germans have made it very clear that they will be amongst the last to recognize the state of Palestine," he told DW in July 2025.
Update, September 22, 2025: This article was originally published on May 25, 2024, and has been updated with the news that the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognized a Palestinian state on September 21, 2025.

Netanyahu will Say "NO" Western Recognition of Palestine
, 16.7M subscribers, Sep 20, 2025Recognition by some Western countries of a Palestinian state won’t have a significant impact on the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or its conduct, a political analyst says. “Will it change his [Netanyahu’s] calculus? Not at the moment. But I think he is beginning to feel the pressure, and I think Israel generally is beginning to feel the pressure,” Ori Goldberg told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv. Israel faces a paradox, Goldberg added. “It keeps going as though it has nothing to contain it or limit its efforts to carry out the genocide of the Palestinian people … On the other hand, circumstances are changing and they’re changing quite rapidly, not necessarily in terms of political results in the field, but in the sense that the Palestinian question is becoming a liability to existing leaders around the world, not just in Europe but in the US also.”

Al Jazeera Doc Investigates “The Disappearance of Dr. Abu Safiya"

A powerful new documentary produced by Fault Lines on Al Jazeera English tells the story of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Palestinian pediatrician and director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza whom Israel has detained with virtually no contact to the outside world for almost nine months. He became known to millions of people around the world for his regular video dispatches from inside the hospital describing the toll of Israel's brutal military assault on Gaza and on the hospital itself. https://www.aljazeera.com/video/fault-lines/2025/9/18/the-disappearance-of-dr-abu-safiya
For more than two decades, Dr Hussam Abu Safiya served as a paediatrician in northern Gaza, rising to lead Kamal Adwan Hospital. Though he had many chances to leave, he chose to stay with his patients even as Israeli attacks escalated.
With each passing month, the toll deepened. His son was killed, his hospital repeatedly struck, and his life threatened. Still, he remained at Kamal Adwan. His resilience was captured in a 10-second video: a lone paediatrician in a white coat walking through rubble towards Israeli forces. To the world, it symbolised defiance. To his family and colleagues, it reflected who he always was.

Sumud Flotilla Attacked Before Reaching Gaza: The Mission Continues

h, 16.7M subscribers, Sep 11, 2025Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-de... We speak to two activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla as it prepares to set sail for Gaza in an attempt to break the Israeli blockade. In recent days, two drone attacks on the flotilla ships, which are docked in Tunisia, have been reported. "We know who has interest in stopping these flotillas," says Mariana Mortágua, a Portuguese parliamentarian who has joined the Global Sumud Flotilla and suspects the strikes were the work of the Israeli military. Mortágua says she has joined the flotilla because it's "my duty to be here and to help in any way I can … to show people that Gaza is a real place. It's not an abstract location. Gaza exists. It's there. Real people are living there and are living under attack." We also hear from Saif Abukeshek, a Palestinian activist based in Barcelona and a member of the Global Sumud Flotilla steering committee. "There is no one mission or campaign that will have a direct outcome impact. But I believe solidarity work is an accumulative process that we have to build in," says Abukeshek. "We have to mobilize people around the world. We have to get pressure on governments, because that's the only way that Israel will listen and will stop their crimes." Global Sumud Flotilla vows to continue mission despite attacks
Despite two suspected drone attacks, the largest civilian-led maritime effort to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza promises to fulfill its mission

Activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla vow to continue their mission to set sail to Gaza, insisting nothing will stop them from breaking Israel’s blockade and bringing aid to Gaza. Members of the Flotilla have reported two suspected drone attacks on their boats while docked in Tunisian waters. Still, the first wave of Flotilla ships departed the Sidi Bou Said port in Tunisia where they were stationed on the night of September 11, and the rest are set to depart on September 12.
“We know who has interest in stopping these flotillas, in stopping this mission to Gaza,” Mariana Mortágua, a member of the Portuguese Parliament who joined the Global Sumud Flotilla, told Democracy Now!, indicating that Israel had a role in the attacks on the ships. “We are very also aware of the fact that Israel did this at the same time they were displacing 1 million people in Gaza. So, there is these tactics that they use all the time to change the attention, to move the eye from Gaza to the flotilla, from the flotilla to Qatar.”
Despite the attacks, activists aboard the flotilla have vowed to continue their mission. “No acts of aggression will stop us. In the coming days the flotilla will be united at sea in our mission to break the siege, to end the genocide and to stand with the Palestinian people in their just struggle for freedom,” said Saif Abukeshek, Global Sumud Flotilla Steering Committee Member.
“People who hit you, as an individual, or as a group, they are also doing that to teach a lesson,” said Francesca Albanese, and the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories. “To make sure that this works as an alert, as a red flag so that others will not follow you.”
“If there is a state behind it, not only it shows the level of conviction that impunity is still that enabling ground, but also it shows the fear,” Albanese articulated.
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is the largest civilian-led maritime effort to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and builds on the efforts of previous flotillas attempting to deliver aid to the besieged Strip, aiming to bring food and medical supplies. The GSF brings together grassroots organizers, sailors, doctors, artists, and solidarity activists from more than 40 countries, including celebrities and celebrated activists such as Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham. Many of these organizers are part of groups including the Global March to Gaza, Sumud Convoy, Sumud Nusantara, and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.
Gaza on the brink
As international organizations and aid groups have reported for months, Gaza is on the brink of mass famine due to Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid. Aid organization Action Against Hunger reports that in July and August alone, their nutrition teams “received more than 400 cases of malnourished children, with 20% of cases classified as severe.”
Beyond depriving Palestinians in Gaza of food, Israel is also depriving Palestinians of medical supplies. “Just a few days ago, I spoke with a doctor in Gaza who told me about 3,600 Palestinian children with type 1 diabetes who no longer have access to insulin,” Moroccan pharmacist and human rights defender Aziz Rhali, a part of the Flotilla crew, told Peoples Dispatch. “For a child with type 1 diabetes, insulin is a matter of life or death. Those 3,600 children face a death sentence.”
“At the same time, healthcare workers themselves have been deliberately targeted by the Israeli forces, precisely because their presence signals the presence of civilians,” said Rhali. “Why has Al-Awda Hospital been attacked so many times? Because the hospital’s existence in the north means Palestinians remain in that region. The goal is clear: to push Gazans to leave by destroying the healthcare system, and therefore eliminating the medical staff who sustain it.”
“What we are seeing in Gaza City is not just a crisis, it is a collapse of human survival,” says Natalia Anguera, Head of Operations for the Middle East at Action Against Hunger. “Families are hungry, exhausted, grieving, and can’t imagine having to move their children again – some for the twenty-sixth time in less than two years. Despite our teams’ relentless efforts, they too are facing this.

BREAKING NEWS!!!
Israel’s Latest Strike on Gaza City High-Rises Displaces Hundreds
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepened this week as Israel launched another airstrike on Gaza City, destroying a major high-rise and displacing hundreds of Palestinian families. According to Al Jazeera English, the Israeli military claimed the targeted building housed Hamas infrastructure. Yet, no evidence was provided to support this assertion.
A Growing Crisis of Displacement
With each airstrike, safe spaces in Gaza are disappearing. Families forced to evacuate are running out of places to seek shelter. Amjad Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGOs Network, warns that displacement is reaching a breaking point. Entire neighborhoods have been erased, leaving communities with no stability, no security, and no future.
International Silence and Human Cost
While global leaders debate, the people of Gaza face the daily reality of survival. Parents are struggling to find shelter for their children. Those who have already lost their homes now face repeated displacement, creating what human rights advocates describe as a cycle of trauma and destruction.
Why This Matters
The destruction of high-rises is not just about buildings. Each tower housed families, businesses, and lives intertwined with the fabric of Gaza City. Every strike that topples a tower also shatters the community within it.
For many Palestinians, this is not just war—it’s the slow erasure of their homes, their history, and their hopes.

Israel Intensifies Gaza Assault as Global Aid Flotilla Faces Threats
September 5, 2025
Israeli forces have escalated their campaign in Gaza City with intensified airstrikes and forced evacuations, targeting high-rise residential towers and displacement camps. At the same time, an international aid flotilla carrying medical supplies and activists continues its voyage toward Gaza despite Israeli threats to block its entry.
Escalation in Gaza City
On Thursday, Israeli jets destroyed the 12-storey Mushtaha Tower in western Gaza City after ordering its evacuation, according to Al Jazeera. The building was surrounded by makeshift tents housing families displaced from earlier bombardments. Israel’s defense minister Israel Katz declared that the “gates of hell” were opening in Gaza, signaling a shift toward striking high-rise structures in the city center.
Airstrikes have also intensified in the Sheikh Radwan and Zeitoun neighborhoods. Civil defense teams reported recovering bodies from collapsed residential buildings, often using only basic tools. Gaza’s health officials said dozens were killed in Thursday’s attacks, adding to a death toll that has surpassed 63,000 since the war began in October 2023.
Humanitarian Crisis
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. According to local authorities and aid groups, more than 360 people have died of starvation in recent months, including at least 130 children. In August alone, 185 Palestinians reportedly died from hunger. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and shortages of food, water, and medicine are acute.
Displacement camps in Gaza City have also been struck in recent days. Videos verified by Al Jazeera showed fires tearing through tents after Israeli bombardments, with children among the casualties.

Displacement camps in Gaza City have also been struck in recent days. Videos verified by Al Jazeera showed fires tearing through tents after Israeli bombardments, with children among the casualties.
The Global Sumud Flotilla
In response to the crisis, the Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest humanitarian convoy yet assembled, departed Barcelona earlier this week carrying food and medical aid. Over 50 vessels are participating, joined by international figures such as activist Greta Thunberg and actor Liam Cunningham.
Greg Stoker, a U.S. veteran sailing with the flotilla, told The Majority Report that participants have faced intimidation and threats of interception from the Israeli military. Organizers insist their mission is peaceful and strictly humanitarian.
International Response
The conflict has deepened global divisions. The International Association of Genocide Scholars declared this week that Israel’s campaign in Gaza meets the legal definition of genocide under international law. The resolution, supported by more than 80 percent of its members, accused Israel of “indiscriminate and deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.”
Some European governments, including Belgium and Spain, have called for sanctions on Israel, while others remain aligned with Washington’s position that only a negotiated settlement can end the war. Former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn opened a two-day conference in London examining Britain’s role in the conflict.
Meanwhile, dissent is growing inside Israel, where a number of reservists have refused mobilization orders, even at the risk of imprisonment.
Ceasefire Talks and Hostages
Hamas leaders have signaled willingness to release some Israeli hostages as part of a phased ceasefire deal, according to reports from WION. Israel has rejected the latest proposal, demanding the disarmament of Hamas and continued Israeli security control over Gaza. Approximately 20 hostages remain alive in captivity, according to Israeli estimates.
Outlook
As bombardments intensify and the flotilla nears Gaza, the humanitarian toll continues to rise. UN officials warn of mass displacement and famine unless aid deliveries are permitted. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing negotiations overshadowed by escalating violence on the ground

The International Association of Genocide Scholars says that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza. The group passed the resolution on Sunday, joining a chorus of countries, experts and rights groups who say Israel's actions meet the United Nations' definition of genocide. Israel's leaders have denied prior allegations of genocide. More than 63,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and famine is now gripping parts of the enclave due to a partial Israeli blockade. Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports that the Trump administration is crafting a sweeping postwar redevelopment plan for Gaza, and the State Department has instructed its overseas diplomats to refuse visas for most Palestinian Authority passport holders. Leading genocide scholars organization says Israel is committing genocide in Gaza
World Sep 1, 2025 11:36 AM EDT
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The largest professional organization of scholars studying genocide said Monday that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
The determination by the International Association of Genocide Scholars — which has around 500 members worldwide, including a number of Holocaust experts — could serve to further isolate Israel in global public opinion and adds to a growing chorus of organizations that have used the term for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Israel rejects the accusation and called the resolution an “embarrassment to the legal profession.”
“Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide,” according to group’s resolution, which was supported by 86% of those who voted. The organization did not release the specifics of the voting.
READ MORE: Two Israeli rights groups say their country is committing genocide in Gaza
“People who are experts in the study of genocide can see this situation for what it is,” Melanie O’Brien, the organization’s president and a professor of international law at the University of Western Australia, told The Associated Press.
In the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war, Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251. Forty-eight hostages remain in Gaza, around 20 of whom Israel believes are alive.
In Israel’s ensuing offensive, large swaths of Gaza have been leveled and most of the territory’s over 2 million people have been displaced. More than 63,000 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters or civilians but that around half have been women and children.
The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals. The United Nations and independent experts consider it the most reliable source on war casualties. Israel disputes the figures but has not provided its own.
The scholars’ resolution accused Israel of crimes including “indiscriminate and deliberate attacks against the civilians and civilian infrastructure” in Gaza and called on Israel to ” immediately cease all acts that constitute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza.”
It begins with an acknowledgment that Hamas’ attack “constitutes international crimes.”
Genocide was codified in a 1948 convention drawn up after the horrors of the Holocaust that defines it as acts “committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” The U.N. and many Western countries have said only a court can rule on whether the crime has been committed. A case against Israel is before the U.N.’s highest court.
Israel — founded in part as a refuge in the wake of the Holocaust, when some 6 million European Jews were murdered — vehemently denied it is committing genocide.
“The IAGS has set a historic precedent — for the first time, ‘Genocide Scholars’ accuse the very victim of genocide — despite Hamas’s attempted genocide against the Jewish people,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “Disgraceful.”
Israel says Hamas is prolonging the war by not surrendering and releasing the hostages. In recent days, it began the initial stages of a new offensive and declared Gaza City a combat zone.
The scholars group, founded in 1994, has previously held that China’s treatment of the minority Muslim Uyghurs and Myanmar’s crackdown on Rohingya Muslims meet the threshold for genocide.
In 2006, the organization said statements by then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in which he called for Israel to be “wiped off the map,” had “genocidal intent.”
In July, two prominent Israeli rights groups — B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel — said their country is committing genocide in Gaza. The organizations do not reflect mainstream thinking in Israel, but it marked the first time that local Jewish-led organizations have made such accusations.
International human rights groups have also leveled the allegation.
Meanwhile, South Africa has accused Israel of breaching the Genocide Convention at the International Court of Justice — an allegation Israel rejects.
The court does not have a police force to implement its ruling, which could take years, but if a nation believes another member has failed to comply with an ICJ order, it can report that to the U.N. Security Council.
The council is able to impose sanctions and even authorize military action, but each of the five permanent members holds a veto, including Israel’s staunchest ally, the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has said he does not believe genocide is taking place.

Israel attack on tower marks ‘terrifying shift’ towards targeting high-rise buildings in Gaza City
Sep 5, 2025 #Gaza #Israel #Airstrikes
It’s been a fast-moving situation over the past few hours. The Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, stated that the “gates of hell” are opening now in Gaza City, confirming that the Israeli military has issued a forced evacuation order for one of the high-rise buildings in Gaza City – which was destroyed by Israeli jets shortly afterwards. The building is called the Mushtaha Tower, it’s a 12-storey building located on the western side of Gaza City and surrounded by hundreds of makeshift tents, as this portion of the city is considered to be the last refuge for families fleeing areas of bombardment in the eastern outskirts. Katz’s comments mark a very terrifying shift in the bombardment campaign taking place in Gaza City, as we are witnessing a new phase of deadly air strikes that will primarily focus on high-rise towers on Gaza City, which contains hundreds of these towers that are mostly in densely populated areas. It’s worth also saying that air strikes are also intensifying in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City. We have received reports that the Israeli military has issued new forced evacuation orders for more areas in the very heart of Gaza City, marking a very deadly surge in air strikes and expanded ground operations aiming to completely – as the Israeli military says – “defeat Hamas” and to control this area. There is a great deal of fear and uncertainty in Gaza City right now, especially around the forced evacuation areas, as people do not know where they can go to find safety. And the journey to the south of Gaza might be the final journey for them, from which they might not be able to return to Gaza City. What is truly excruciating about displacement in Gaza City at the moment is not just what families will leave behind, nor the uncertain path ahead, but it’s more about the weight of loss, the grief and the complete strangeness and unfamiliarity that is taking place. Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports

Israel trying to ‘punish civilian areas’, drive Palestinians out of Gaza : Analysis
Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-de... The Trump administration is facing growing criticism for suspending visas for Palestinian passport holders, including for Palestinian officials set to attend the annual U.N. General Assembly this month. When the U.S. denied a visa to Yasser Arafat to address the U.N. in 1988, the General Assembly was moved to Geneva — the U.N. faces similar calls now. The move by the U.S. is "an indication of the unprecedented degree to which the U.S. government has handed the levers of its foreign policy over to the Israeli regime," says Craig Mokhiber, an international human rights lawyer who formerly served as the director of the New York Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. He resigned in October 2023 over the U.N.'s failure to adequately address large-scale atrocities in Palestine and Israel. Mokhiber also says there is more the U.N. could do to stop the genocide in Gaza. The General Assembly has the ability to circumvent the Security Council with a "United for Peace" resolution that could force "concrete action" in Gaza. (17:15 GMT)Two Palestinians shot in Israeli raid near Ramallah
Two young men were wounded by Israeli live fire after forces stormed the Jalazone refugee camp, north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Wafa news agency reported.
One was shot in the hip and hand, and the other in the foot. Both were reported to be in a stable condition, it said.
Israeli forces have carried out near-daily raids and incursions into Palestinian towns and villages across the West Bank since launching their genocidal war on Gaza. The raids are typically accompanied by mass arrests, destruction of infrastructure, home demolitions and killings.

Footage shows civil defence crew pulling bodies from rubble in Gaza City
Gaza’s civil defence teams were filmed rescuing victims from under the rubble of a destroyed house in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City, where Israeli forces have been intensifying attacks as part of their planned offensive to seize the enclave’s urban centre.
The video, posted on social media and verified by Al Jazeera, shows rescuers using only basic tools and their hands to lift debris from the destroyed home that belonged to the al-Ghaf family.
According to the civil defence member who filmed the scene, three bodies were recovered, while others were pulled out injured. At least 35 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza City so far today, sources at local hospitals tell Al Jazeera.
The footage of the recovery operation was deemed too graphic to include on this live page.
